Prayer times today

Adhan and prayer times are not a fixed table copied between countries. Each time is an astronomical calculation of the sun's position relative to your coordinates on a given day, which is why the adhan times shift by minutes each day and differ between neighbouring cities.

The astronomy behind each adhan

• Fajr adhan: begins at true dawn, estimated by the sun's depression angle below the horizon (18, 19.5 or 15 degrees depending on the convention).
• Dhuhr adhan: shortly after the sun passes the meridian.
• Asr adhan: when an object's shadow equals its height (majority view) or twice its height (Hanafi view), which produces a visible difference between tables.
• Maghrib adhan: at complete sunset.
• Isha adhan: when the red afterglow disappears, also estimated by a depression angle.

Why another app shows different adhan times

1. Calculation method: Umm al-Qura, Muslim World League, ISNA and others use different Fajr and Isha angles.
2. Asr school: choosing one shadow length or two moves the Asr adhan earlier or later.
3. Location precision: a few kilometres can shift an adhan time by a minute or two.
4. Elevation and time zone: both affect the observed moment of sunset and therefore the Maghrib adhan.
