About Amman and its timings
Amman was built across a ridge and seven original hills, which is why its streets climb and drop constantly and its stone staircases became part of its identity. The city expanded quickly through the twentieth century under successive waves of arrivals, producing a mix of white limestone architecture and sprawling newer districts. Standing above a thousand metres gives it a cold winter that is rare in the region, and snow does fall in some years.
Amman's altitude pulls sunrise earlier and pushes sunset later by a few minutes compared with the Jordan Valley just beside it.
