The days of Hajj in order, and what confuses pilgrims each day
Hajj is a journey organised by days. Understanding the map of the five days settles the heart and prevents most mistakes.
Map of the days
- 8th (Tarwiyah): enter ihram where you are in Makkah, move to Mina, and pray shortened prayers from Dhuhr to Fajr without combining.
- 9th (Arafah): the greatest pillar. Stand from midday until sunset in supplication, then move to Muzdalifah after sunset.
- 10th (Nahr): stone Jamrat al-Aqabah, offer the sacrifice, shave or trim, then perform tawaf al-ifadah and saai if due.
- Days of Tashriq (11, 12, 13): stay overnight in Mina and stone the three jamarat after midday. Leaving after two days is permitted if you exit Mina before sunset.
- Before departure: the farewell tawaf, except for women in menstruation or postnatal bleeding.
What confuses people most
- Order on the 10th: keeping the order is the sunnah, and the majority hold there is no harm if stoning, shaving and tawaf are done out of order.
- Stoning before midday during Tashriq: most scholars do not permit it, and avoiding it is safer.
- Delegating the stoning: allowed for the ill, the elderly, the weak and pregnant women who fear harm.
- Expiation: omitting an obligation such as the overnight stay or stoning requires a sacrifice; pillars cannot be compensated for.
Health and crowds
Drink water continuously, carry sun protection, keep your camp number and wristband colour written on paper, and never walk against the flow of a crowd. Use prayer times on Makkah time and azkar for travel supplications and talbiyah.
