How zakat on wealth is calculated, step by step

Zakat is a financial pillar with precise conditions: reaching the nisab threshold, completing one lunar year, being free of due debt, and then paying one quarter of a tenth, that is 2.5% of the zakatable base.

The nisab and where the price comes from

  • Gold nisab: 85 grams of 24 karat gold.
  • Silver nisab: 595 grams.
  • Many contemporary bodies prefer the silver nisab for cash because it is lower and therefore more beneficial to the poor. The calculator offers both.

Metal prices refresh automatically from a global price provider and are cached, so they may differ slightly from your local jeweller. You can always enter a price manually when you have a more accurate local quote.

What enters the base and what is deducted

  1. Cash in hand, bank accounts and digital wallets.
  2. Gold and silver by weight. Jewellery in regular use is a point of scholarly difference, and paying is the more cautious position.
  3. Trade goods at market value on the due date, not at purchase price.
  4. Debts owed to you that are likely to be repaid are added; debts currently due from you are deducted.

When the lunar year starts

The year starts on the day your wealth first reached nisab and is counted on the Hijri calendar. If you prefer a Gregorian year, pay about 2.577% instead of 2.5% to compensate for the extra days. Use the Hijri date converter to fix and remember your due date.

This result is indicative guidance, not a fatwa and not financial advice. Consult your local zakat authority for complex cases such as companies, shares, rented property or long term loans.
