About Cairo and its timings
Cairo grew from Fustat on the Nile, then from a walled Fatimid city, into the largest urban area in Africa and the Arab world. Its layers are legible on a single street: Mamluk minarets, Khedivial facades, and modern towers along the river. Al-Azhar remains a teaching authority drawing students from dozens of countries, which is why the city's timing convention is followed far beyond Egypt.
Cairo uses the Egyptian General Authority of Survey convention, whose slightly wider dawn angle brings Fajr a few minutes earlier than other methods.
