About Damascus and its timings
Damascus is an oasis on the Barada river in the shadow of Mount Qasioun, and the water of the Ghouta basin is why it has stayed inhabited for thousands of years. Its old city inside Roman walls is still a lattice of alleys anchored by the Street Called Straight, with the Umayyad Mosque at its centre as one of the oldest congregational mosques standing. At over 650 metres it has cold winters and a dry summer that feels mild next to the coast.
Damascus lies against the flank of Mount Qasioun, so sunset reads a few minutes earlier here than on open plain at the same longitude.
