Every timetable hands you five moments, so many people treat a prayer as a single instant. In reality each prayer is a window with a beginning and an end, and knowing the end matters more in practice, because that is what decides whether you caught the prayer or missed it.

For the full daily and monthly table: prayer times
Every window, opening and closing, in one table
| Prayer | Window opens | Window closes |
|---|---|---|
| Fajr | True dawn, a horizontal white band on the eastern horizon | The first appearance of the sun disc |
| Dhuhr | The sun leaves the meridian and the shadow starts lengthening | The shadow equals the object plus the noon shadow |
| Asr | Shadow equals the object for the majority, or twice it for Hanafis | Sunset, with the preferred time ending as the sun yellows |
| Maghrib | The sun disc has fully set | The red twilight fades, which starts Isha |
| Isha | The red twilight fades | Middle of the legal night by preference, Fajr by necessity |
Each window, and the sign that marks it in the sky, is detailed below.
The sky sign behind each time
Prayer times are visible signs before they are numbers: a first light on the horizon, a sun leaving its zenith, a lengthening shadow, a disc sinking, a red glow fading. The numbers in your app are a calculated translation of those signs, which is why they differ by minutes between methods, as explained in prayer time calculation methods.
Fajr: true dawn versus false dawn
Before real dawn a vertical white glow sometimes rises on the eastern horizon, then darkness returns. That is the false dawn, and it neither begins the prayer window nor ends eating for a fasting person.
True dawn is a horizontal white band spreading along the horizon that never falls back into darkness. With it the prayer window opens and fasting begins. In calculation it is expressed as the sun depression angle below the horizon: 18 degrees in the Muslim World League method, 18.5 in Umm al-Qura, and 19.5 in the ISNA method. That difference in angle is why two apps in the same city disagree about Fajr.
End of Fajr: sunrise. Anyone who cannot complete one full unit before the disc appears has lost the window.
Sunrise: a discouraged interval
After sunrise there is a discouraged interval until the sun has risen the height of a spear, roughly 15 to 20 minutes, during which voluntary prayer is avoided. The recommended forenoon prayer begins after that. A second discouraged moment falls when the sun stands at the meridian minutes before noon, and a third after the Asr prayer until sunset. Obligatory and missed prayers may be performed at any time; the restriction concerns unrestricted voluntary prayers.
Dhuhr: from the zenith to a shadow of equal length
Dhuhr begins as the sun crosses the local meridian, an astronomical moment on which methods differ by seconds at most. In practice: watch the shadow of an upright rod. The shortest shadow is the meridian, and the moment it starts lengthening the window is open.
End of Dhuhr: when the shadow of an object equals its own length beyond the noon shadow, which for the majority of jurists is also the start of Asr.
Asr: two opinions and nearly half an hour
This difference is juristic, not astronomical:
- The majority, including Shafii, Maliki and Hanbali: Asr begins when the shadow equals one times the object plus the noon shadow.
- The Hanafi position: Asr begins when the shadow reaches twice the object plus the noon shadow.
The gap is half an hour or more depending on season and latitude, widening in winter and away from the equator. That is why our city timetables offer the Hanafi option, as on prayer times in Makkah.
End of Asr: sunset, with two distinct stages. The preferred time runs until the sun yellows, and a permitted time follows until sunset, which should not be relied on without need.
Maghrib: from sunset to the fading of twilight
Maghrib begins when the disc of the sun has fully sunk below the horizon, not when it starts to set and not when an app announces a minute early. This same moment is when fasting ends in Ramadan, as covered on the Ramadan page.
End of Maghrib: the disappearance of the red twilight in the west, which is the start of Isha. Its length ranges from about an hour and a quarter near the equator to more than two hours in northern summer.
Isha: to the middle of the night, then necessity
Isha begins when twilight fades, calculated at 17 or 18 degrees of sun depression in most methods, or as a fixed interval after Maghrib in the Umm al-Qura method, which uses 90 minutes and 120 minutes in Ramadan.
Preferred end of Isha: the middle of the legal night, meaning the midpoint between Maghrib and Fajr, not twelve o clock. If Maghrib is 6:00 pm and Fajr is 4:00 am, the middle of the night is 11:00 pm. A time of necessity extends to Fajr, but delaying without cause is blameworthy.
High latitudes and exceptional cases
Above roughly 48 degrees latitude, twilight never fully fades at the height of summer, so the astronomical sign for Fajr and Isha does not occur. Established methods use estimation rules:
- Middle of the night: the night is halved, with Isha ending and Fajr starting at the midpoint.
- One seventh: the night is divided into seven parts, Isha at the end of the first seventh and Fajr at the start of the last.
- Angle based: a proportion of the night derived from the angle the city normally uses.
- Nearest city or nearest day: times are taken from a lower latitude city, or from the last day the sign genuinely occurred.
No single solution is agreed upon, and the reference is the local fiqh council or ifta authority. Our northern city pages state the rule in use rather than hiding it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between true dawn and false dawn?
False dawn is a vertical white glow on the horizon followed by darkness; it opens no window and does not end eating. True dawn is a horizontal band that spreads and never returns to darkness; with it the prayer window opens and fasting begins.
When does the Fajr window end?
At sunrise. Anyone who completes one full unit before the disc appears has caught the window; anyone waking later performs it as a missed prayer when they remember.
Why do two apps differ by half an hour on Asr?
Because one follows the majority view, that the shadow equals the object, while the other follows the Hanafi view of twice the object. The difference is juristic rather than computational, and it grows in winter and away from the equator.
What does the middle of the night mean for Isha?
It is the midpoint between sunset and true dawn, not twelve o clock. If Maghrib is 6:00 pm and Fajr is 4:00 am, the middle of the legal night is 11:00 pm.
How are times set where twilight never fades in summer?
Estimation rules are used, such as halving the night, dividing it into sevenths, or taking the nearest city or the last day the sign occurred. Which rule applies is decided by the local juristic authority.
What to set once before your next prayer
Learn the end of each window as well as its beginning, because the end decides whether the prayer was caught. Set your calculation method and Asr school once on prayer times so they match your mosque, and remember that time and direction are linked conditions, so review the Qibla page too.
