
You open two prayer time apps in the same city at the same moment, and one shows Fajr at 4:12 while the other shows 4:31. Neither is broken. The gap comes from a scientific and juristic decision made long before any code was written: at what angle do we define Fajr? This guide unpacks the calculation step by step so you know which number to follow and why.
Times measured by shadow and times measured by light
The five prayers are not one kind of event, and this is the root of the confusion:
- Dhuhr begins when the sun crosses the local meridian. That is a precise astronomical instant, identical across methods to within seconds.
- Asr begins when an object's shadow reaches one or two times its length beyond the noon shadow. The difference here is juristic, not astronomical.
- Maghrib begins when the solar disc is fully below the horizon. Again an agreed astronomical instant.
- Fajr and Isha depend on twilight: the first white light on the eastern horizon, and the disappearance of the red glow in the west. Light is a slow gradient, not a sharp event, so it is measured by how far the sun has sunk below the horizon. That is where all the disagreement lives.
A practical rule: if two apps disagree on Dhuhr and Maghrib, the cause is usually a wrong location or time zone. If they disagree only on Fajr and Isha, the cause is the twilight angle.
What an 18 degree Fajr angle actually means
Darkness does not arrive at once after sunset, because the atmosphere scatters sunlight. The deeper the sun sinks, the fainter the glow. Astronomers describe three stages: civil twilight at 6 degrees, nautical at 12 degrees, and astronomical at 18 degrees.
Prayer time calculation uses the same logic. A method picks a solar depression angle that matches the scriptural description of true dawn or the end of dusk. When a method says the Fajr angle is 18 degrees, it means: announce Fajr when the centre of the sun is 18 degrees below the horizon.
In minutes the effect is large, and it grows with latitude:
- Near the equator, the difference between 18 and 15 degrees is about 12 minutes.
- At 35 degrees north, the same difference can reach 18 to 22 minutes in summer.
- Above roughly 48 degrees, an 18 degree angle may never occur on summer nights, because the sun never sinks that far. This is the high latitude problem.
The established methods and their numbers
Every calculation method is simply a pair of angles adopted by a scientific or religious authority. The most widely used are:
- Umm al-Qura (Saudi Arabia): Fajr 18.5 degrees, Isha a fixed 90 minutes after Maghrib, extended to 120 minutes in Ramadan. Note that Isha here is an interval, not an angle.
- Muslim World League: Fajr 18, Isha 17. Common across Europe and parts of Asia.
- Egyptian General Authority of Survey: Fajr 19.5, Isha 17.5. Produces an earlier Fajr and a later Isha.
- University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi: Fajr 18, Isha 18. Common in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.
- Islamic Society of North America: Fajr 15, Isha 15, chosen to suit northern latitudes.
- Dubai, Qatar, Kuwait, Singapore, Turkey and Tehran: each with its own officially adopted local setting.
No method is universally more correct. In practice the right one is what the religious authority in your country uses and what your neighbourhood mosque calls to prayer with, because praying together on one schedule is a goal in itself. The two Asr opinions and the half hour gap
Asr has nothing to do with twilight angles; it depends on shadow length:
- Majority view (Maliki, Shafii, Hanbali): Asr begins when an object's shadow equals its own height beyond the noon shadow.
- Hanafi view: Asr begins when the shadow reaches twice the object's height beyond the noon shadow.
The gap between the two can reach 30 to 60 minutes in winter away from the equator, the single largest difference you will ever see in a timetable. If your Asr feels far later than the mosque, your app is almost certainly set to the Hanafi opinion.
Why Maghrib is a minute or two off from your mosque
Even for the agreed astronomical events, small differences remain, from three sources:
- Elevation: higher ground widens the visible horizon, so the sun sets later. At 1000 metres, Maghrib arrives roughly 5 minutes later than at sea level.
- Atmospheric refraction and solar radius: sunset is normally computed when the sun's centre is 0.833 degrees below the horizon, a figure combining refraction and the apparent radius of the disc.
- Coordinate accuracy: an error of 20 kilometres east or west shifts the times by about a full minute.

High latitudes: when twilight never ends
Above roughly 48 degrees, there are summer weeks where the sun never reaches 18 degrees below the horizon, so neither the Fajr nor the Isha condition is astronomically satisfied. The recognised solutions are:
- Middle of the night: the span from Maghrib to sunrise is halved; the midpoint ends Isha and begins Fajr.
- One seventh of the night: Isha takes the first seventh after Maghrib, Fajr the last seventh before sunrise.
- Angle based fraction: a duration proportional to the chosen angle is derived from the night's length.
- Nearest valid day or nearest moderate latitude: intervals are copied from a day or place where the condition holds.
These are recognised juristic solutions, not software tricks. Ask your local Islamic centre which one they follow, then set your app accordingly.
Calibrate your times in five minutes
- Ask your mosque which method and which Asr opinion they use, or read their printed timetable.
- Open prayer times and set your location precisely, or type your city name.
- Select the same method and the same Asr opinion.
- Compare Maghrib with the local call to prayer for one day. A match within a minute means your coordinates are correct.
- Check the monthly timetable to confirm the difference stays stable across the month, not just for one day.
Short answers to common questions
Does the difference between methods invalidate a prayer? No. Every method is an effort to pin down a scriptural sign, and praying after the time enters according to your adopted method is valid. Caution suggests a slight delay for Fajr and no rush for Isha.
Why does Isha shift in Ramadan? Some methods, Umm al-Qura among them, extend the Isha interval from 90 to 120 minutes in Ramadan. The daily fasting timetable is on the Ramadan page.

Differing prayer times are not chaos. They follow directly from three decisions: the Fajr angle, the way Isha is defined, and the Asr opinion. Once you know the values your local authority uses and set your tool to match, the disagreement disappears and only irrelevant seconds remain.
