Surah Al-Waqi'ah
Virtues of Surah Al-Waqiah and reciting it for provision
nothing traced to the Prophet ties Surah Al-Waqiah specifically to provision. The well-known line "whoever recites Al-Waqiah every night will never face poverty" is a statement of Ibn Masud with weak chains. Reciting it is rewarded like the rest of the Quran, and the means of provision the Quran does name are listed further down.
People searching for "Al-Waqiah for provision" are usually looking for a way out of financial pressure, and an honest answer serves them better than a promise with nothing behind it. The surah is Meccan, 96 verses, about the Day of Resurrection and the three categories of people: the foremost, the companions of the right, the companions of the left. Provision is not an independent theme in it; crops, water and fire appear as proofs of resurrection.
What is reported, and how it grades
| Report | Source | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| "Whoever recites Al-Waqiah every night will never face destitution" | Statement of Ibn Masud, in al-Bayhaqi and Ibn as-Sunni | Companion's statement, weak chains |
| "Hud, Al-Waqiah and Al-Mursalat turned my hair grey" | at-Tirmidhi and others | Graded weak by specialists |
| A set count to open provision | No basis | Not established |
| Writing it as an amulet or reciting it over water for wealth | No basis | Not established, and contrary to the Sunnah |
| "Whoever recites a letter of Allah's Book has a good deed for it" | at-Tirmidhi, sound | Established - the basis of its reward |
The grade of the famous statement
The statement behind this surah's reputation is traced to Abdullah ibn Masud, not to the Prophet in its best known chains, and specialists graded those chains weak. Some scholars recited it following that statement in hope, not as an established merit - and that is the limit of what can honestly be said.
The distinction matters: being rewarded for the letters of a chapter you recite is one thing; attaching a guaranteed worldly result to a number of recitations is another.
What the Quran establishes about provision
- Seeking forgiveness: "Ask forgiveness of your Lord... He will send down rain upon you in abundance" (Nuh 10-11).
- Consciousness of Allah: "Whoever fears Allah, He will make a way out for him and provide for him from where he does not expect" (At-Talaq 2-3).
- Taking real means: "So walk upon its slopes and eat of His provision" (Al-Mulk 15).
- Supplication, charity and kinship ties, all in authentic reports about provision and blessing in it.
What the surah itself says
Surah Al-Waqi'ah 56:63-65
Verified recitation
These are the closest verses in the surah to the theme of provision, and their point is that growth comes from Allah, not from the farmer's power - a call to reliance alongside work, not to a recitation count.
What is not established
- Reciting it 41 times or three times to open provision.
- Writing it as an amulet or reciting it over water and salt.
- A guarantee of wealth. Even the weak statement says "destitution", not guaranteed wealth.
Read Al-Waqiah because it describes the Day of Resurrection as though you were watching it, not as an invoice for income. The Quran was revealed to be reflected upon.
