Surah Al-Kahf
Virtues of Surah Al-Kahf and reciting it on Friday
The question returns every Friday: what is actually established about reciting Surah Al-Kahf? Sahih Muslim: whoever memorises ten verses from its beginning is protected from the trial of the Dajjal. The light between two Fridays is a statement of the companion Abu Saeed al-Khudri, graded authentic as his own words.
One hundred and ten verses carrying four narratives - the people of the cave, the owner of the two gardens, Moses with al-Khidr, and Dhul-Qarnayn - and each one deals with a trial: faith, wealth, knowledge, power. Those are the very trials tied to the Dajjal the surah warns of, which is why memorising its opening is linked to protection from him. Below: the grade of every report, the exact Friday window, and what is not established.
What is reported, and how it grades
| Report | Source | Grade |
|---|---|---|
| "Whoever memorises ten verses from the beginning of Al-Kahf is protected from the trial of the Dajjal" | Sahih Muslim | Authentic |
| The man reciting Al-Kahf who was overshadowed by a cloud with angels | Bukhari and Muslim | Authentic |
| "Whoever recites Al-Kahf on Friday, light shines for him between the two Fridays" | Al-Hakim, al-Bayhaqi, from Abu Saeed | Authentic as a companion's statement |
| Reciting it on Thursday night carries the same merit | Scholars' reading of the report | Held by most of them |
| Reciting it three Fridays fulfils a wish | No basis | Not established |
Ten verses from the beginning
This is the strongest report in the chapter because it is in Sahih Muslim. Another wording in Muslim says "from the end of Surah Al-Kahf".
Surah Al-Kahf 18:1-2

The Friday window
- Starts at sunset on Thursday, since the night of Friday begins then.
- Ends at sunset on Friday.
- If missed, there is no specific make-up; recite it any time for the reward of recitation and resume next Friday.
Reciting it in parts is fine; the report does not require one sitting.
What is not established
- Three Fridays to fulfil a wish - no basis, an invented timing.
- Reserving it for calamities - the supplications for distress are known and do not involve a chapter count.
- Reading the "light" as something people physically see - scholars take it as light of guidance, without speculating beyond the text.
The Friday merit is not a charm but a weekly reminder: four narratives about faith, wealth, knowledge and power, read every seven days so the trials stay visible.

A Friday plan for Surah Al-Kahf
- Split it in two: half on Thursday night (through verse 55), half on Friday morning - about 12 mushaf pages in total.
- Memorise the first ten: five verses in week one, five in week two, then review every Friday before reciting.
- With a reciter: follow the audio on the recitations page; the full text is at Surah Al-Kahf.
- For precision: repeated wording in Al-Kahf separates the near-identical verses in the Moses narrative.
- For consistency: keep Friday as a fixed marker inside your Quran khatma plan.
