
"Where is the Qibla" sounds like a simple question until you are in a hotel room with no sense of direction, or watching a phone compass arrow swing between two numbers. The real problem is that most people know exactly one method, so when it fails they have no fallback. This guide gives you seven independent methods, several of which need no device at all, plus a verification routine that catches an error before you pray.

The Qibla is not a straight line on a map
The Kaaba sits at 21.4225 N, 39.8262 E. The direction to it from anywhere distant is a great circle bearing: the genuine shortest path across a sphere, not a straight line on a flat map. Flat maps stretch the globe and distort direction, which is why many people are surprised that the Qibla from New York points roughly north east rather than south east.
A bearing is measured in degrees clockwise from true north: 0 north, 90 east, 180 south, 270 west. Once you know your city bearing, every method below is simply a way of finding that bearing on the ground.
Method one: the computed bearing from your coordinates
This is the most accurate option available, and it depends on no sensor and no weather. It is derived from your latitude and longitude against the Kaaba coordinates, and it gives a fixed number that never changes for your location. In practice: write the bearing down and keep it where you pray at home. The direction does not change, so there is nothing to check again.
Method two: the sun passing over the Kaaba
Twice a year the sun stands directly above the Kaaba: around 27 or 28 May and around 15 or 16 July, at solar noon in Makkah. At that exact moment, anywhere the sun is visible, the shadow of an upright object points exactly away from the Qibla. Stand facing opposite the shadow and you are facing the Qibla.
This needs no compass, no phone and no calculation, and it is the gold standard others are checked against. Its limitation is that it exists for two instants a year, and it is useless where the sun is below the horizon at that time.
Method three: the midday shadow for true north
Every bearing method needs true north, not magnetic north. The sun supplies true north for free: at local solar noon, which is the Dhuhr entry time shown on prayer times, the shadow of a vertical rod lies exactly on the meridian. North of the Tropic of Cancer that shadow points to true north; south of the equator it points south.
Plant a stick in level ground, mark the tip of its shadow at the Dhuhr moment, then rotate your computed bearing from that line. This beats any compass used indoors.
Method four: the magnetic compass and declination
A compass points to magnetic north, which differs from true north by an amount called magnetic declination. It ranges from a few degrees across Arabia to more than ten degrees in Western Europe and North America, and it drifts slowly over time.
The rule: compass bearing equals true bearing minus easterly declination, or plus westerly declination. Indoors the problem is worse than declination: reinforced concrete, air conditioners, chargers and speakers make readings unreliable in the first place. Step onto a balcony or into a yard, calibrate by tracing a figure of eight, then read.
Method five: the North Star at night
In the northern hemisphere Polaris sits within one degree of true north and does not move through the night. Find it by extending the last edge of the Big Dipper about five times. If you can see it, you have true north more precisely than any compass gives you, and you rotate your bearing from there.
The southern hemisphere has no bright equivalent, so the Southern Cross is used to estimate south, or daytime methods are used instead.
Method six: an established mosque mihrab
The mihrab of a mosque that has stood for decades is an excellent field reference, because it was usually set with survey instruments and reviewed by an authority. Stand in the courtyard and note the mihrab direction against fixed features: a street edge, a distant building, a tile line. Then carry that direction to your nearby home.
One caution: temporary prayer rooms in malls and airports are often set by rough estimate, so they are not a reference for correction and may be the thing that needs correcting.
Method seven: maps and prepared rooms
Aerial maps let you rotate the image and read the direction against the shape of the building itself, which helps inside a room with no view of the horizon. Many hotels in Muslim countries also mark the Qibla on the ceiling or inside a drawer. Treat that as a starting point and verify it with one of the methods above, since some markers were copied from a differently oriented room.

Note that New York, Toronto and Chicago fall in the north east quadrant while Sydney falls in the north west. That is not an error; it is the curvature of the earth.
Verify your direction in two minutes
- Read your city bearing from the table or from the Qibla page.
- Step outside, away from metal.
- Establish true north with Polaris at night or the midday shadow by day.
- Rotate the bearing clockwise from north and mark it against something permanent, such as a tile edge or a street line.
- Compare the result with the mihrab of the nearest older mosque. A two or three degree gap does not matter.
Away from Makkah the obligation is to face the general direction, not the exact building. Someone who made a genuine effort and later found a small deviation has a valid prayer according to the majority of jurists, with nothing to repeat. Facing an entirely wrong direction while able to verify does call for repeating.
