Protecting the home is not a paper hung on a wall or a secret number repeated; it is remembrance that brings a place to life. In Hisn al-Muslim these adhkar are distributed across chapters by time and situation: the Quran in the home, then the remembrance on entering, then on leaving, then the morning and evening adhkar, then seeking protection for children, then the household practices at bedtime. This page presents them in their own places, moving nothing out of its chapter, and it is a branch of the complete ruqyah text.

First: the Quran in the home
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Do not turn your houses into graves. Satan flees from a house in which Surah al-Baqarah is recited" (Sahih Muslim 780). So the first protection is a fixed time in your home for reciting Surah al-Baqarah, even a few pages, aloud.
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:285-286

The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord.
An-Numan ibn Bashir reported the Prophet saying: "Allah wrote a book two thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth, and sent down from it two verses with which He sealed Surah al-Baqarah. They are not recited in a house for three nights without a devil staying away from it" (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2882, graded hasan gharib by at-Tirmidhi and authenticated by al-Albani).
As for ﴿ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلْحَىُّ ٱلْقَيُّومُ ۚ لَا تَأْخُذُهُۥ سِنَةٌۭ وَلَا نَوْمٌۭ ۚ لَّهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ مَن ذَا ٱلَّذِى يَشْفَعُ عِندَهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِۦ ۚ يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ ۖ وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِشَىْءٍۢ مِّنْ عِلْمِهِۦٓ إِلَّا بِمَا شَآءَ ۚ وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ ۖ وَلَا يَـُٔودُهُۥ حِفْظُهُمَا ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَلِىُّ ٱلْعَظِيمُ﴾, its place in this chapter is at bedtime rather than among the daytime adhkar, and it is detailed in the sleep adhkar in order.
Second: remembrance on entering the home
The established basis is in Sahih Muslim (2018): remembering Allah on entering and when eating keeps Satan from spending the night with the household or sharing their food. What matters is the remembrance of Allah, not one particular formula.
The supplication
In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon our Lord we rely.
This wording is in Abu Dawud (5096), whose chain has a break that several scholars graded weak, so the basis of the chapter is the hadith of Muslim above. Whoever says this wording does nothing wrong, and one greets the household with salam as Allah commanded.
Third: remembrance on leaving the home
The supplication
In the name of Allah, I rely on Allah; there is no power and no strength except with Allah.
Reported by Abu Dawud (5095) and at-Tirmidhi (3426), who authenticated it, with the wording: "It is said to him: you are sufficed, protected and guided."
Fourth: the morning and evening adhkar
These are adhkar of time, said at the two ends of the day; they are not household protection formulas, and this is exactly where Hisn al-Muslim places them.
al-Ikhlas and the two refuge surahs, three times
The Prophet said: "Recite al-Ikhlas and the two refuge surahs three times in the evening and in the morning; they will suffice you against everything" (Sunan Abi Dawud 5082, Jami at-Tirmidhi 3575, graded hasan). Read them from the Quran if you have not memorised them.
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah
The supplication
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.
Three times in the evening; whoever says it is not harmed by a sting that night (Musnad Ahmad 7898, Jami at-Tirmidhi 3604). Its basis, said when stopping at a place, is in Sahih Muslim (2708).
In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing harms
The supplication
In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
Three times morning and evening (Sunan Abi Dawud 5088, Jami at-Tirmidhi 3388, graded hasan).
The master supplication of seeking forgiveness
The supplication
O Allah, You are my Lord; there is no deity but You. You created me and I am Your servant. I keep Your covenant and my pledge to You as much as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil I have done. I acknowledge Your favour upon me and I confess my sin, so forgive me, for none forgives sins but You.
Reported by al-Bukhari (6306). It is said at the beginning and the end of the day, and it belongs to the chapter of seeking forgiveness, not to protection formulas.
There is no deity but Allah alone, one hundred times
The supplication
There is no deity but Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is capable of all things.
One hundred times a day, and in it: "it is a shield for him from Satan that day until evening" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6403). The remaining morning and evening adhkar with their counts are on the adhkar page.
Fifth: seeking protection for children
The supplication
I seek protection for you both in the perfect words of Allah from every devil and every poisonous creature, and from every envious eye.
The Prophet used this for al-Hasan and al-Husayn (Sahih al-Bukhari 3371); it is the most fitting wording for children, and for a single child the singular form is used.
Sixth: household practices at bedtime
The Prophet instructed that doors be closed with the name of Allah mentioned over them, that vessels be covered, lamps put out and waterskins tied (Sahih al-Bukhari 3280, Sahih Muslim 2012). These are practical Sunnahs for the home, not counted formulas, and they do not replace the bedtime adhkar, whose place is in the sleep adhkar in order.
What is not established in protecting the home
| Commonly circulated | What is correct |
|---|---|
| Hanging verses or papers on walls for protection | Protection comes through recitation and remembrance, not through hanging objects; amulets are forbidden |
| Special counts such as seven or forty for the home | No count is established in this chapter; transmitted counts belong to their own chapters: three times, one hundred times |
| Treating Ayat al-Kursi as a morning formula only | Its great virtue is transmitted at bedtime; some scholars also recommended it morning and evening |
| Reciting al-Baqarah for a fixed number of days | The hadith encourages reciting it in the home without specifying days; its closing verses are mentioned with three nights |
| Relying on remembrance while neglecting practical means | Remembrance is a religious means, joined with securing the home, taking care and seeking treatment |

Frequently asked questions
Which adhkar for protecting the home are authentic?
Reciting the Quran at home, especially Surah al-Baqarah and its closing verses; remembrance on entering and leaving the house; the morning and evening adhkar with their counts; seeking protection for children with the perfect words of Allah; and the Sunnahs of closing doors and covering vessels at night.
Does hanging verses on the walls protect a house?
It does not. Protection comes through recitation, remembrance and action, while hanging an object to repel harm falls under the forbidden amulets.
How many times is "I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah" said?
Three times in the evening, as in the hadith of at-Tirmidhi, with its basis in Sahih Muslim when stopping at a place. No other count is transmitted in this chapter.
Is remembrance enough without securing the home?
Remembrance is a great religious means, and alongside it the Prophet instructed that doors be closed and vessels covered, so combining religious and practical means is the way of the Sunnah.
What is the difference between protection adhkar and sleep adhkar?
The adhkar on this page belong to times and situations during the day and on entering or leaving the house, while the bedtime adhkar are a separate ordered chapter, found in full in the sleep adhkar in order.
